‘Bit’ is an installation consisting of three elements. A narrow light corridor lit amongst darkness functions to direct you towards a manipulated experience of the artwork as a non collaborative act. This leads to an ornate, wall mounted porcelain- look sculpture contained within a box frame and the sound of horses trotting. The sculpture is of a German Renaissance Bridle-bit brought to life from an illustration in Scutter’s book “Bit Book”, Augsburg 1584.
The artist explored her frustrations as an educator, not easily facilitating sculpture with increasingly large class sizes. Previous encouragement of large scale collaborative pieces had moved to the creation of dioramas in shoe boxes. Equally her own practice, which had previously seen large scale work, was on hold due to constraints of space. This parallel was explored when the artist was put in her students position, making within only the dimensions of a measured shoebox, using ornament as subject and symbolism.
