The rapid motion of the spinning top toy is representational of the acute bout of spinning vertigo sometimes experienced as a symptom of vestibular disorder, a condition the artist suffers from. The forms for ‘Spinning Tops’ are static abstractions of original victorian ornamental plasterwork, reminiscent of traditional spinning top toys. Such toys usually made from wood, existing since antiquity. The toys were designed to spin rapidly on the ground, the motion of which causes it to remain precisely balanced on its tip because of its rotational inertia. The forms within the work juxtapose with the artists own disequilibrium.
